About motor neurone disease (MND)

Motor neurone disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells - neurones – controlling the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breath and swallow degenerate and die. MND is an uncompromising disease, indiscriminate and brutal. The cause is unknown and there is no cure.

As the symptoms of MND increase, the level of care needed to remain at home also increases . People with MND need to adapt to the changing levels of disability caused by the disease but often need physical and emotional support as well.

MNDAQ receives very l ittle government funding and relies heavily on community support to provide services for people with MND and their families. 
Our services include:

Information

We offer information and education about MND, news about current research, and updates on activities and events. Members also receive a bi-monthly newsletter and other regular updates as they come to hand.

Support

Our care advisers can offer information, support and advice by telephone, as well as suggestions for other services you may need over time. Just as importantly, talking to someone can help to break down feelings of isolation and anxiety.

Equipment

We have a pool of specialised equipment and aids for loan that may help people with MND to maintain their independence, communication with others and quality of life for as long as possible.  However demand for our limited equipment is high and waiting lists are frequently very long.

Social support

Some members get together on a regular basis to share their journeys and offer social support for people living with MND and their families. Please contact us to find out if there is a social support group in your area.
